Activist Training Spring 2024

Our Regional Learning and Organising Team are offering the following upcoming training courses for new and existing Branch Activists.

UNISON Stewards are offered free training which can be done in person or online and travel, accommodation and childcare expenses are all covered by UNISON.  UNISON Stewards are entitled to paid time off to attend initial training and to carry out Trade Union Duties and the branch will offer support and guidance every step of the way.

Employment Law

A 2 day course for existing Stewards.

Disciplinary to Tribunal – A Reps Role in the Process

This course is designed to show the importance of effective representation, following process and adhering to deadlines when dealing with disciplinary and grievances.  Topics will include dealing with disciplinaries and grievances in the workplace, different types of dismissals, the Equality Act and bringing about an Employment Tribunal.

Date:  23/24 January 2024

Online Organising Stewards Course

Our online course for elected stewards delivers the same learning outcomes as the face-to-face Stage 1 + Stage 2 workplace representatives course combination. It is hosted on the TUC web platform, from where you will be able to access the course resources as well as submit coursework and engage with other participants in closed forums.

Please note the closing date for applications is 8th January 2024.

Although your learning will be mainly self-guided the course is lead by experienced TUC tutors who will deliver three virtual live tutorial sessions using Microsoft Teams. These tutorials will provide structure and guidance to the course, they also create a supportive learning environment. The tutors are also on hand to provide additional support if required.

It is important to be able to commit to taking part in all three of the online tutorials, as outlined here:

  • 10am – 12pm Monday 22nd January 2024
  • 10am – 12pm Monday 29th January 2024
  • 10am – 12pm Monday 5th February 2024

Organising Stewards Course

A 5 Day course for New Stewards.

Option 1:  5 Mondays from 5 February 2024

Option 2:  3 & 2 Day Blocks including 11 – 13 and 18 & 19 March 2024

Location:  UNISON Resource Centre, Carlisle

ERA Refresher

A 1 day course for existing ERA Accredited Activists.  Accreditation runs for 5 years and only Activists with ERA Accreditation can represent members.

Date:  8 February 2024

Health & Safety Reps Starter Course

A 3 day course for New Health & Safety Reps.

Dates:  13 – 15 February 2024

Location:  UNISON Resource Centre, Carlisle

Online New Union Learning Reps Course

The course will be delivered online over MS Teams and will cover:

  • the role of the UNISON learning rep
  • how to find out what people want to learn – and how
  • making the case for learning
  • networking and making contacts
  • advertising and communicating with members
  • where to find help and resources

You must be able to attend all four sessions of the course dates below, and complete approximately one hour of homework after each session.

  • 9.30am – 1pm Thursday 22nd February
  • 9.30am – 1pm Thursday 229th February
  • 9.30am – 1pm Thursday 7th March
  • 9.30am – 1pm Thursday 14th March
